The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees announced late Thursday that University President Robert Sternberg has resigned.

Sternberg, who took over the presidency of UW on July 1st, has been under fire over his management of the state’s only public four-year university. Since taking office, five administrators and three deans have left, some because of differences with Sternberg, but others left for other reasons.

In a press release issued by the University, Sternberg was quoted as saying

I have come to realize that as wonderful as the University of Wyoming is, it may not be the best fit for me as president.

Sternberg is on administrative leave, and the interim President will be Dr. Dick McGinity. Sternberg will be paid $325,000. In July, he signed a 3-year contract that guaranteed a $425,000 base salary, along with $42,000 in housing allowances and $75,000 in retirement benefits.

The announcement came after an eight-hour executive session of the Trustees held today in Laramie.
