Two Die In Crash Near Thayne
A two-vehicle crash in western Wyoming left two Afton residents dead on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Decia W. Wright, 35, was driving a Jeep northbound on U.S. Highway 89 about six miles south of Thayne. Olivia R. Currier, five months, was a passenger, according to the news release from Patrol Sgt. David Wagener.
At 4 p.m., the Jeep drifted into the southbound lane.
A pickup, driven by Afton resident Kyle Mclain, 25, saw the Jeep enter his lane and he tried to avoid a crash. Despite his efforts, a head-on collision occurred.
Wright and Currier died at the scene. Wright was not wearing a seat belt. Currier was properly seated in a child restraint.
Mclain was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken by ground ambulance to Star Valley Medical Center in Afton, and treated and released.
The crash caused U.S. Highway 89 to be closed for about two-and-a-half hours. Those responding to the scene rerouted traffic.
The Highway Patrol is investigating inattentive driving as a contributing factor in the crash.
Wright and Currier marked the 97th and 98th highway fatalities in Wyoming in 2015, compared to 99 fatalities at this time last year.
