Christmas is less than a week away and Cheyenne police are reminding last-minute shoppers to take some simple steps to avoid being "Scrooged."

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the easiest way to prevent your car from being broken into is to lock your doors.

"The majority of crimes where we have somebody taking things from a car (are) crimes of opportunity," said Malatesta. "People are simply walking down the street pulling on car doors until they find one that's unlocked."

If you have to leave valuables in your car, Malatesta recommends you lock them in the trunk or hide them from plain view.
