Urban Dictionary defines a diamond in the rough as "something that has hidden exceptional characteristics and future potential, but currently lacks the final touches that would make it truly stand out from the crowd."

If you've had the privilege of witnessing a concert at the Hynds Building in downtown Cheyenne, you've seen how decades of neglect have taken their toll on the once majestic landmark.

For over 40 years, from its opening in 1920 though the 1960s, it was home to several of Cheyenne's largest banks. Sadly, the banks and offices moved out and the vacant building fell into disrepair.

Recently, however, the old Hynds building has experienced a resurgence. The popular Fridays in the Hynds concert series regularly attracts the largest crowds of any downtown venue.

Which is both good and bad. Good, in that, it's the hippest scene you'll find anywhere in the Capital City. Bad, in that, it's cramped, dirty and was never intended to be a live music venue.

It's a vivid reminder of the enormous potential that Downtown Cheyenne has. If only local investors had the financial capital to repair the damage caused by years of indifference.

Cracks and all, there is hope. Groups like Arts Cheyenne have discovered new life where was once only decay. Buried deep within the rubble, they have found a diamond in the rough.

Downtown Cheyenne isn't dead. There's a reason why the Wyoming Rib and Chop House is packed every night while nearby businesses sit empty. If you give consumers a product they want, they will support it. Even if it's live music in an "old, decrepit, run-down building."

Let's hope the recent rebirth of the Hynds Building is an example of bigger and better things to come.
