Cheyenne has produced some incredible athletes over the years, including several who went on to play professionally. Here's our list of the five greatest athletes from the Capital City.

1. John Godina - Back in his days at Cheyenne Central High, Godina was an All American in both football and track and field. After graduating, he went on to become a three time World Champion in the Shot Put. He also won a Silver Medal at the 1996 Olympics and Bronze Medal four years later.

2. Boyd Dowler - Dowler holds the unique distinction of being the only Cheyenne native with a Super Bowl ring. After starring as a three sport athlete at Cheyenne High School, he was later drafted by the Green Bay Packers. In addition to being named the 1959 NFL Rookie of the Year, he went on to win five NFL titles during his twelve seasons in the league, including Super Bowls I and II. He was also named to the NFL 1960's All Decade Team and NFL's 50th Anniversary All Time Team.

3. Chris LeDoux - Perhaps the most famous athlete from Wyoming, LeDoux won two Wyoming State Rodeo Championship bareback riding titles for Cheyenne Central High School. After a stint at Casper College, he went on to win the World Bareback Riding Championship at the National Finals Rodeo. In addition to his rodeo accomplishments, he is best known for his career as a country music artist, which resulted in several top ten singles and gold albums.

4. Rick Sofield - Although he attended high school in New Jersey before moving on to the University of Minnesota, Sofield was born right here in Cheyenne. He was a first round draft pick of Minnesota Twins in 1975 and went to play several years in the big leagues. However, he is better known for his lengthy coaching career. He is currently the third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

5. James Johnson - Arguably the greatest Wyoming high school basketball player in the past 50 years, Johnson was a blue chip recruit coming out of Cheyenne East High School. After spending two years at Wake Forest University, he was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bulls in 2009. Since turning pro, he's bounced around the league, playing for several teams. He currently plays for the Toronto Raptors and set a career high earlier this year when he scored 27 points versus the Houston Rockets.

Honorable Mention:

Don Westbrook - This Cheyenne Central High School star was a key member of the undefeated 1971 University of Nebraska national championship team. He went on to play four seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots.

Troy Dumas - Like Westbrook, this Cheyenne East High School alum played his collegiate football at Nebraska before spending two years in the NFL as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams.

Jim Eliopulos - After starring at linebacker for Cheyenne Central High School, Eliopulos was an All-WAC selection at the University of Wyoming. He was later drafted in the third round by the Dallas Cowboys and spent four injury plagued years in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets.

Jesse Johnson - Johnson was a star Defensive Back for Cheyenne East High School in the mid 70's. After playing college ball at the University of Colorado, he spent four seasons in NFL with the New York Jets.

Mike McLeod - Like Johnson, McLeod was part of the stalwart Cheyenne East defense in the 70's. At Montana State University, he set a school record for the longest interception return. He went to play two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, In 2005, he was inducted into the Montana State Athletics Hall of Fame.
