Lawmakers Recommend Changes in Education Accountability Process

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — An interim legislative committee is recommending taking away some duties of the state school superintendent and the Education Department. The Select Committee on Education Accountability on Wednesday recommended legislation that transfers a number of education accountability duties from the Wyoming Education Department to the state Board of Education.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill says she was pleased to see 'sub groups' of Wyoming students who generally do not do well on science tests exceed national averages on the recently released National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science test. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wyoming says most of the complaints it receives from inmates in state jails and prisons deal with their medical and mental health care. Report Claims Wyoming Had Most Safety Violations [AUDIO]

A report by U.S. House Democrats says Wyoming accounts for more than 800 of the over 2,000 citations issued over a 13-year period to companies for safety and drilling violations on public lands in 17 states. Doug Randall reports. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill is disputing a Casper Star Tribune story that ran on February 4 that said that her office was being investigated by multiple state agencies.
