Officials celebrated Wyoming's 124th State Arbor Day Monday with a tree planting ceremony on the north lawn of the Wyoming Supreme Court Building.

Wyoming State Forester Bill Crapser says it's important to recognize the importance of trees in Wyoming. Crapser says  "you have to be serious about growing trees in this part of the world, but they are very important in our towns and our forests."

Governor Matt Mead and Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen read proclamations to honor the day in the city and state. Cheyenne was given a Tree City USA 30 year award Lisa Shaw and the Niobrara Conservation District received the 2012 Outstanding State Arbor Day Award and Caroline Heward of Medicine Bow Elementary School was  the state Arbor day poster contest winner.
