I think it is safe to say that Spring is finally here. Not just in word, but in deed. Recently, we had a visitor to KGAB Mornings, better known as Cheyenne's Backyard Ombudsman, Ken Rudman. It's always good to have Ken in for his monthly visit. He always has some great ideas for saving you money and enhancing your yard for the best experience possible.

This time he talked about something known as harvesting rainwater. It's pretty simple. According to Ken, all you need is a food grade 55 gallon plastic drum, and place it under a good down spout. It's like money falling from the skies. Then you can use the rain water to take care of your plants, shrubs and lawn around the house. This can really save on your water bill in the long run.

The other topic on the table was homemade compost piles. This can really benefit you and your yard. According to Ken, you can either buy a prefabricated tumbling composter, or you can make your own. Here are the steps if you want to make your own barrel for composting:

  • Buy a plastic drum between 20 and 55 gallons
  • Drill a hole in the bottom and in the top of your tumbler (Large enough for you to put a 48" pipe or plastic PVC Pipe through as an axle)
  • Now you can pass your pipe through the center of the barrel, from hole to hole
  • You can either use two saw horses with rails extending from horse to horse or you can build what is called a saw buck to handle the weight of the barrel and makes it easier for tumbling
  • Cut the opening screw in hinges to make a good opening. Also, don't forget to install the latch. The hardware can be picked up at any local hardware store.

These are a few ideas to get you going which will help you with your backyard. The Backyard Ombudsman checks in about once a month and we're looking forward to what he has next for us and our yard.
