Several Homes, Vehicles Damaged During Monday Storm

Anthony Pollreisz, K2 Radio

Several homes were severely damaged during a flash flood on Casper’s east side on Monday.

Stew Anderson, the emergency manager for Natrona County, says the flood caused the heaviest damage just below the Sheepherder Hill Fire’s burn scar near Hat Six Road in the Hat Six Ranch area.

Anderson says, though no homes were washed away, and though no injuries were reported, several homes were flooded with water, logs and boulders.

“At one home we were out to, there was at least three feet of water and debris both in the home and outside the home,” Anderson said. “It also washed away several vehicles – four or five full-sized vehicles – as well as a few ATVs.”

Anderson says the flood had similar characteristics to many post-wildfire flash floods.

“Unfortunately, it was a typical burn scar flash flood,” Anderson said. “It dropped a lot of water over a short period of time and there was no vegetation to hold that back – the water came off Casper Mountain and into the drainage.”

Anderson says Natrona County Emergency Management issued a flash flood warning between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday night. Emergency managers also triggered an emergency siren shortly afterward due to the volume of water and debris that was seen rushing down Casper Mountain.

The Sheepherder Hill Fire burned nearly 16,000 acres on Casper Mountain last September.
