Rollover Crash Kills Two

Crash Scene (Matt Foster/TSM)
Two Nebraska children were killed in a one-vehicle rollover Thursday on Interstate 80 on the east side of Laramie, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Steve Townsend.

He says the crash began shortly after 9:30am when a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup driven by 23 year old Edgar Carmona failed to negotiate a  right hand curve in the eastbound lane of the interstate. The vehicle then went off the left side in the median where it hit a guardrail and then a cement bridge abutment. Townsend says the vehicle then rolled an undetermined amount of times, ejecting all five of the vehicle occupants who were not wearing seat belts. Two children–12 year old Sergio Carmona and 13 year old Verania Carmona, both of Columbus, Nebraska- were among those ejected.

Sergio was pronounced dead at the scene, while Verania was transported to Ivinson Memorial hospital in Laramie and then to Denver Children’s Hospital, where she later died. Driver Edgar Carmona was wearing a seat belt and was not ejected. He later had to be extricated from the vehicle, but survived the crash, as did the other three adults who were ejected.

Edgar Carmona has been cited for driving without a license and failure to maintain a single lane of travel. Townsend says investigators believe fatigue may have been a factor in the crash.
