Larry Nance, Jr. scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but his shot to tie the game and force overtime with less than five seconds left in regulation was no good. It allowed the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels to hold off the Wyoming Cowboys 48-46 in Las Vegas Saturday night.

UNLV (16-8, 7-4) got their biggest lead of seven points, at 41-34, with 6:43 left, but failed to put away the Pokes. The Cowboys rallied with a key 3-point play from Nathan Sobey, a Nance jumper and a pair of Riley Grabau 3-pointers in the the last six minutes to give themselves a chance. The second of Grabau’s three’s pulled UW within 48-46 at the 1:05 mark.

The Rebels had a chance to ice it, but Derek Cooke, Jr. came up with a huge steal with 30 second remaining.

After a timeout by Wyoming with 15 seconds to go, the Cowboys worked the ball to Nance on the left side of the court. He made a move to the middle of the paint, but his jumper rolled off, and the Pokes fell short.

Wyoming (14-9, 5-5) dropped their second straight Mountain West game. Grabau was the only other Cowboy, besides Nance, in double figures with 11 points. UW was 19-41 (46.3%) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from deep and 4-5 (80%) at the line. They did end up with 14 turnovers.

UNLV was led by Khem Birch with 10 points. They shot 21-49 (42.9%) from the floor, 3-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc and 3-4 (75%) at the stripe. The Rebels had only seven turnovers. Both teams finished with 25 rebounds.

Next up for the Wyoming Cowboys is a match-up against #5 San Diego State. The Aztecs, who have won 20 straight games, will visit Laramie on Tuesday, February 11. The game will start at 9 p.m.
