Many national polls show President Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, essentially tied in the upcoming race for the White House. But according to a new survey, there’s at least one segment of the population Obama has mostly locked up: smartphone users.

After Harris Interactive polled almost 800 iPhone and Android users, the group found that about half were planning to vote to keep the president in office for a second term, while less than a third said they’d cast their ballot for Romney.

Breaking down those numbers further, 56 percent of smartphone owners with at least a college degree said they’re voting for Obama, with about a third of that group favoring his GOP challenger. Among smartphone owners with a household income of at least $75,000, half are Obama supporters and about a third are Romney fans.

In fact, the only group with which Romney held an advantage was retirees. Those older smartphone users favored Romney by a margin of 57 percent to Obama’s 34 percent.

All of these numbers weren’t just tallied up for fun — they could provide real insights about effective mobile advertising and engagement, with Krishna Subramanian, CMO of mobile marketing firm Velti, saying, “The smartphone market is becoming a whole new demographic that candidates must take into consideration.”
