Should Presidential Candidates Be Questioned About Their Failed Marriages? — Survey of the Day

Newt Gingrich has surged to the front of the field among Republican presidential hopefuls, despite questions about his past failed marriages.

In fact, Gingrich seemed to score points with GOP voters when he lambasted CNN’s John King during a South Carolina debate for bringing up one of Gingrich’s ex-wives’ allegations of infidelity.

So does the public agree with King that a presidential candidate’s failed marriages are fair game for questions, or with Newt, who said he was “appalled” that King would bring this up in a debate?

According to a survey by Poll Position of 1,143 registered voters, 48 percent said it was an appropriate question, 42 percent answered that it wasn’t, and 11 percent had no opinion.

However, Gingrich may have still been onto something when he went after King. If only republicans who plan on voting in the primary are considered, 51 percent of respondents believe the question was not appropriate, whereas only 41 percent answered that it was.
