A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department says it looks like many local drivers are ignoring the city ordinance banning cell phone usage by motorists, based on the results of a recent enforcement effort targeting Dell Range Boulevard. Sgt. Rob Dafoe says special patrols in that area issued 57 citations for cell phone usage while driving, along with a few tickets for speeding, running red lights and similar offenses. The cell phone effort was in effect between March 19th and March 23rd, and Dafoe says police are planning similar events in the future, some of which will be city wide and others targeting specific venues in the city. Cheyenne's ordinance bans cell phone usage while driving, except in cases where a hands-free cell phone is being used.
