Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak says 2014 statistics show crime is lower than it's ever been in the capitol city.

He says the numbers show 308 crimes being committed per every 10,000 Cheyenne residents. Kozak says the previous recorded low was in 2000, when 412 crimes were recorded for every 10,000 residents.

Kozak says the latest numbers are also well below national statistics on overall crime. He credits active public participation in crime fighting-efforts as well as the efforts of his officers. Kozak says he thinks goal setting by his department as well as the active efforts of his officers to meet the goals have been helpful.

He says one of the major overall goals was to decrease the crime rate, and says it's gratifying to see that goal achieved.

The chief says one specific goal was to reduce the automobile crash rate by 10 percent. It ended up dropping by 20 percent, and Kozak says he thinks the department's efforts at improving DUI enforcement were especially helpful in that area.
