Pokes Woes Continue With Loss to Appalachian State

The Appalachian State Mountaineers scored twice in the first four minutes at the start of the game and beat the Wyoming Cowboys 31-13 Saturday.

App State's (3-1) Marcus Cox raced 59 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Four minutes later, Latrell Gibbs intercepted a Cam Coffman pass and returned it 91-yards for a touchdown and a quick 14-0 lead.

Wyoming (0-5) rallied with a Brian Hill 2-yard touchdown run, but the Mountaineers scored late in the first half after a fake field goal and added another score on their first possession of the second half. That gave Appalachian State a 28-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Cowboys added a late Coffman to Josh Tapscott 8-yard touchdown pass after a Mountaineer field goal.

Hill ran for 208 yards and the score on a career-high 30 carries. Coffman threw for 155 yards and a t-d, but also had the interception and was sacked four times. Andrew Wingard led the Pokes defense with eight tackles, which included one for a loss and a quarterback hurry. Overall, UW out-gained App State, 373-to-314, in total offense.

Wyoming is 0-5 for the first time since 1975. They've lost eight straight dating back to last season.

The Cowboys return to Mountain West play next Saturday night at Air Force. The game will start at 8:15 p.m.
