With National Poison Prevention week coming up March 17th-23rd, the Wyoming Poison Control Center is reminding people to follow instructions on prescription medications and keep them in a safe place.

Center spokeswoman Joan McVoy says that while most people  use the drugs responsibly, there has been a steady increase in abuse of the drugs, especially hydrocodone, oxycodone and methadone. She says three out of four people who abuse the drugs do not have a prescription for them.

The center is urging people to keep their medications out of reach of children and in a secure location not easily accessed by visitors who may steal them. McVoy also says people need to make sure they clearly understand how to use the medications, adding they shouldn't hesitate to ask their doctor or pharmacist about any questions they may have.
