PAWS Test To Stay For Now

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming K-12 students may not see major changes in the annual statewide assessment in the next couple of years.

Currently students in certain grades are given what is known as the PAWS test to help determine how proficient they are in math, science and reading.

The Wyoming Education Department has been looking at other types of tests so that the performance of Wyoming students can be better compared to students in other states and nationally. One alternative test is about half the cost of PAWS and provides faster results.

However, issues with confidentiality of student information and timing make it unlikely that any changes will occur before the 2015-16 school year. And lawmakers say they want to take their time and make the best long-term decision for the state.
