May 8, 1945 marks the year and day that there came an end to World War II. America and Great Britain celebrated with flags and banners all across the country.

It was a long and bloody haul, but this day marks a time when German troops finally laid down their arms in surrender to the allies in Europe as well as other countries in the world.

  1. The first American soldier was killed by a Russian, and not a German.
  2. Over 100,000 Allied bomber crews were killed over Europe during the war.
  3. More U.S. servicemen died in the Air Corp than did in the Marine Corp.
  4. The youngest serviceman in the U.S., who enlisted in World War II was actually 12 years of age! His name was Calvin Graham, and his real age wasn't discovered until after he was wounded.
  5. Only one out of every four U.S. servicemen serving on U-Boats actually survived the war.

There is much more to the war that we probably don't even know about. But one thing we do know, after much effort at home and abroad, after many lives lost and battle won, this was the day that America and Europe claimed victory and defeat of the German Armies.
