CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Wildlife and transportation officials are asking drivers to be watchful of migrating wildlife as winter sets in.

The Associated Press reports that as colder weather approaches, many large game animals are migrating from their summer grazing grounds in the mountains to lower elevations to protect themselves from the harsh winter. But to get to these places, many animals have to cross Wyoming's state highways.

Wyoming Department of Transportation spokesman Cody Beers says "a lot of our roadways are built through the winter wildlife habitat." He recommends traveling 10 mph below the speed limit, especially during the early morning hours and dusk.

Wyoming Game and Fish biologist Stan Harter says going "a little bit slower will really not increase the amount of time it takes to get somewhere by that much versus spending a lot of time in the hospital."
