Officials: Sexting Becoming an Issue in Cheyenne Schools [VIDEO]

Local law enforcement officials say “sexting” is a growing problem in Cheyenne’s Junior and Senior high schools. During a joint press conference Wednesday, Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak said recent investigations have revealed that youth are taking sexual pictures of themselves, or others, and transmitting them to friends.

Laramie County District Attorney Scott Homar said state statutes and federal codes make it illegal to posess, create or share explicit images of a minor under the age of 18, even if the person is possessing, creating, or sharing a photo or video of themselves.

Homar added that offenders of this type of activity who are caught with these photos or videos on their phone can be subject to juvenile charges, felony criminal charges, or even federal criminal felony charges.

A letter has been sent to parents of students in Laramie County School District #1 advising them of the growing problem and some of the consequences that can occur if a student becomes involved in this type of activity.

The Cheyenne Police Department will host a meeting for parents and students about the issue on April 9, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. at South High School.
