Motorcycle Chase Hits Speeds of 150 MPH Near Buffalo

Face it, leadfoot, you’re not going to outrun the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

In the second high-speed chase this week, troopers arrested a Sheridan man after a pursuit reaching 150 mph near Buffalo on Wednesday, according to a news release

A trooper saw a black motorcycle speed 110 mph in an 80 mph zone just northbound of Kaycee on Interstate 25 at 2:40 p.m., according to the news release from Patrol Sgt. David Wagener.

The trooper began chasing the motorcycle, and its rider Joseph T. DeVries, 33, accelerated. As the trooper began to approach the motorcycle, DeVries accelerated. The trooper again caught up with him about 17 miles north of Kaycee, and DeVries again refused to stop.

Highway Patrol dispatch sent additional troopers as the chase reached speeds of 150 mph.

About 11 miles south of Buffalo, DeVries turned around in the median and began riding south on I-25. Three miles down the road, DeVries lost control of the motorcycle in a ditch west of the highway, and laid it down at a slow speed.

He ran from the scene and troopers saw him drop a pistol from his waistband. Troopers caught up with him and took him into custody at gunpoint.
After his arrest, troopers learned the pistol was stolen.
DeVries was evaluated at the Johnson County Health Center in Buffalo for possible injuries after laying down the motorcycle down. He was taken to the Johnson County Detention Center in Buffalo.
He has been charged with eluding, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, possession of stolen property as well as being held on a felony warrant out of Campbell County Wyoming for parole violation. Other charges are pending.
Sheridan resident Kimberly Schempp, 24, was DeVries’ passenger, and was taken to the health center for treatment. Schempp is not facing any charges.
Two days before this incident, troopers engaged a driver speeding up to 130 mph in a pursuit from Rock Springs to Laramie.
