Will you be wishing upon any falling stars during this weekend’s meteor shower?

Scientists predict this Memorial Day weekend’s meteor shower could produce up to 1,000 falling stars per hour or none at all. Guess we’ll have to keep looking up to find out.

The meteor shower is expected to begin Friday night, May 23, with frequency increasing overnight into Saturday, May 24. The peak should be reached between midnight and 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, May 25.

The falling stars will appear to come from the direction of the North Star. The meteors are remnants of a recently discovered Comet 209P/LINEAR and originate from the constellation known as ‘the giraffe,’ so the shower is being called the Camelopardalids.

Some forecasts predict as many as 200 meteors per hour, while others are expecting up to 1,000 meteors per hour.

If the skies clear up a little over the weekend, we might be able to catch a falling star or two so keep those wishes handy.
