Wyoming Secretary of State Ed Murray says supporters of legalizing the medical use of marijuana in Wyoming have contacted his office about getting the issue before voters.

Murray says under state law supporters of the proposal must get the signatures of at least 25,673 registered Wyoming voters by February 8th to qualify for the 2016 general election ballot.

But beyond the raw number threshold, Wyoming law also specifies that at least 15 percent of registered voters in at least 16 of the state's 23 counties must sign the petition before it can be submitted for a statewide vote.

Wyoming Governor Matt Mead has formed a study group to look at the implications and possible impact of legalizing marijuana in Wyoming. The state's neighbor to the south, Colorado, has legalized pot for both recreational and medical use.
