A man is in custody after leading Albany County Sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase on Jan 20.

The pursuit began after deputies responded to a report of a male passed out inside a running vehicle in Laramie. While on the scene the deputies called an ambulance to check on the condition of the male, whom they realized was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The deputies attempted to have the man exit the vehicle, but his door was not working and the man was unable to exit the passenger side door.

As the ambulance arrived the man drove away in his vehicle at a high rate of speed, putting two deputies standing alongside the vehicle in danger.

The deputies pursued the vehicle down one residential street and then into the Wal-Mart parking lot, and then east on Grand Ave towards Interstate 80. The driver entered the interstate and was traveling east bound in the west bound lanes of travel. The deputies attempted to warn other drivers and have the westbound lane of traffic stopped.

The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office and Wyoming Highway Patrol successfully spiked the vehicle’s tires at mile post 13 on Highway 210, but the pursuit continued.

The chase came to an end on the wind farm west of Cheyenne, where the driver became stuck in a snowdrift while traveling off road. Deputies took the man into custody without injury and he was checked by medical staff before being transported to the Albany County Detention Center.

The suspect was eventually identified as Trevor Sanford, after giving deputies a false name. The deputies learned that Sanford had a nationwide extradition warrant for his arrest out of Colorado for two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Sanford has been issued citations for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, reckless endangerment and interference with law enforcement and eluding.
