It looks like Cheyenne is divided on the issue of whether bicycles in the city should be licensed.

A poll question posted on the Townsquare Media Cheyenne websites on the issue has shown widely fluctuating results. Initially a big majority of respondents were against the idea. Then the yes votes surged into the lead, comprising about 60 percent of the votes as of Thursday morning.

But on Thursday a wave of no votes changed the poll outcome again. Here are the latest results as of mid-day Thursday:

The question was posted the station websites of the three Townsquare Media radio stations in Cheyenne (KGAB-AM, 1063 Cowboy Country and 1019 KING-FM).

With 462 people having responded to the survey at last report, the "no" votes have now reclaimed a narrow lead on the issue

Comments in favor of the idea included those who support taking the license fees to help pay for bicycle lanes and similar projects, people who felt licensing would help track down bicyclists who don't follow traffic laws, and people who see bicycle licensing as a fair policy since automobiles are licensed.

Opponents of licensing said it would be a case of the government trying to tax one more thing, and were concerned about the cost of licensing for families with several children. Some opponents of the idea also saw it as a government intrusion on personal freedom.

One opponent was concerned that such policies would lead to Wyoming becoming "like California or Colorado".

An ordinance requiring bicycle licensing is still on the books in Cheyenne, but is no longer enforced according to a spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department.
