A top official with Laramie County School District#1 says the district is working to reduce the number of district graduates who must take remedial courses in college.

Dr. Tracey Kinney is the district's Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. She says district officials have been discussing the issue for some time, especially with officials at the University of Wyoming and Laramie County Community College.

She says the big challenge is aligning what is being taught in district high schools with what college students need to know to move forward academically.

She adds "We're fixing those issues" over the course of time.

Kinney says a second issue is grade inflation, which leaves the impression students may be more advanced in a subject area than is actually the case. When those students tackle tackle college-level coursework they often find they are overwhelmed, and must take remedial courses

She says the district is working to address that issue as well.
