Laramie County School District#1 is facing a major challenge in trying to keep up with elementary school enrollment, especially in the eastern part of Cheyenne, according to Superintendent John Lyttle.

He says the district already has 22 modular units--containing 44 classrooms-- set up, adding '' that's a school and a half". He says that when the new Meadowlark school opens it will help reduce some of the overcrowding but won't solve the problem entirely.

Lyttle says the Wyoming School Facilities commission is considering the possibility of another elementary school for Cheyenne. But he says the problem is that even if it is built, by the time the  Facilities Commission and the state legislature give their approval and the time it takes to actually build the school, enrollment will very likely have increased some more and the district will still be trying to catch up.

Lyttle says another 500 home subdivision that is being planned  will complicate the situation even more.

Lyttle says that while in some ways the growth "is a good problem to have" for the community as a whole, it will continue to present a challenge for the district for the foreseeable future.
