Laramie County School District#1 is reminding parents and students about it's winter weather procedures.

Superintendent John Lyttle says in general if local roads are passable and buses and schools are able to be kept warm, school will be in session. Some of the factors that can enter into the decision on whether to close school include such things as blowing and drifting snow causing poor visibility and extreme cold temperatures.

Lyttle says there isn't a specific temperature that mandates closing schools, but the overall set of conditions is factored into the decision. During periods of extreme cold, parents can still make the decision to keep their kids home and have it recorded as an excused absence, according to Lyttle.

School closure decisions made the night before a school day will be issued by 10 p.m., while morning closure decisions will be made by 5:30 a.m.

He also says local media isn't contacted for announcements that school will be held, but only for closure decisions.

The closure decisions are also announced through the district's automated rapid notification system, which issues the alert through recorded phone messages. The district also announces closures on it's website.

In the event the district's three rural schools-Willadsen, Clawson  and/or Gilchrist- are closed, the rapid notification system will not be used. That decision will be announced to local media and posted on the website, however.
