Both Laramie County school districts saw an increase in enrollment from the 2016-2017 school year to 2017-2018, according to a new state report.

The increases ran counter to an overall 0.3 decrease in statewide public school enrollment over that same period, according to the Wyoming Department of Education.

The local enrollment increases were not large. LCSD#1 saw an increase of 35 students, to 14,071 in the current school year. LSCD#2 enrollment jumped by 50 students to 1,051 as of this fall.

The slight increases in Laramie County school enrollment may reflect the fact that the Laramie County economy tends to be more diverse than that of most of the state, and less dependent on the energy industry which has been hit with a downturn over the last few years.

For example, Natrona County School District#1 saw an enrollment decrease from 13,010 students last school year to 12,975 as of this fall. Campbell County School District#1 enrollment dropped from 8,726 to 8,708 students over that same period. The economies of both Natrona and Campbell counties are closely tied to the energy industry.

While Laramie County has had some oil drilling activity over the last few years, it's economy also includes state government, tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture as significant components.

Those industries have not been as severely impacted as the oil and gas industries by a downturn in energy prices over the last two years or so. You can see the latest statewide enrollment numbers by district here.
