There’s been slow growth to the Keystone Fire in Albany County over the last few days, but it’s now burned nearly 2200 acres.

The latest fire activity has been on the northwest side of the fire. Smoke seen Sunday was from successful burnout operations at the junction of U.S. Forest Service (USFS) roads 511 and 512.

In a release from the USFS, Incident Commander Trainee Dave Carter said that,

“the increase in acreage came from yesterday’s burnout along the USFS 511 road on the northwest side of the fire; the fire appears to be staying along that road for now.”

Burnout work is planned for the south end of the fire along USFS road 586.B and connect it with USFS road 536.

On Sunday, crews also worked to connect the fire line along USFS road 507 to Douglas Creek. Work that is north of the fire is being done to tie into USFS road 511 west of Rambler.

On the southeast side, work today includes operations along USFS road 588 from USFS 517 road to Lake Creek.

Structure defense preparations in the Keystone community were completed and efforts now shift towards Moores Gulch. The hope is to complete those today (Monday).

Rocky Mountain Team Blue Operations Section Chief Rob Powell provided an update earlier this morning.

Closures in the area remain in effect. There is three percent containment on the fire and over 450 personnel working on it.

There is a community meeting tonight (Monday) at 7 p.m. at the Albany County Fairgrounds. All interested parties are invited to attend.
