Kaysen: Undecided On Cheyenne Sign Proposal

Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says he hasn’t decided yet what his final vote will be on a proposal to loosen restrictions on political and idealogical sings in the city.

Kaysen voted for the proposal on first reading earlier this  week in city council but says he can see merits on both sides of the argument on the proposal. The mayor says on one hand he strongly supports the first amendment rights of  local residents. But he says those who fear an explosion of such signs will have a negative effect on the overall appearance of the community also have a valid point. Councilman Mark Rinne also argues the signs could be a safety hazard if they block motorists vision.

If the proposal wins final approval, residents could leave up political or idealogical signs up all year if they want. If the proposal wins final council approval, the city’s Unified Development Code will be changed to reflect the loosened restrictions.
