The only Democratic member of the Laramie County Commission says he won't be running for another term this time around.

Ron Kailey says that if he had been elected again he would have to give up his retirement benefits from the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities when he leaves that position soon.

The Wyoming Retirement system requires people to quit any government job before collecting benefits. Both the BOPU post and the office of Laramie County Commissioner are government jobs.

Besides being the only Democrat on the county commission, Kailey is also the only one who currently lives within the city limits of Cheyenne. He was elected to the commission in 2014, serving one term.

Two other commission seats are also on the ballot this year. Incumbent Republican Linda Heath says she plans to run for re-election, while Troy Thompson, also a Republican, has not said what his political plans are.

Cheyenne realtor Gunnar Malm announced he will be running for the commission last month.

Former commissioner and long-time political activist M. Lee Hasenauer is widely believed to be gearing up to run for the board again as well but has not formally announced plans to get into the race.
