July Visitation Down From Last Year, Number of Vehicles Up

(National Park Service)

The number of vehicles entering Yellowstone National Park in July was up over last year at every entrance. Yellowstone National Park spokesman Al Nash says according to Park Service statistics, almost as many people visited Yellowstone in the month of July as in the previous six months combined.  Nash says there were 812,212 recreational visitors to Yellowstone in July and a total of 1.8 million so far in 2013.

Nash says the total number of recreational visitors to Yellowstone in July was down 5.25 percent but vehicle traffic was up 4.32 percent compared to the same period in 2012. That’s because beginning this year, the park is using a new average number of people per vehicle, known as a multiplier, based on surveys conducted in 2012. Yellowstone began using the new, lower multipliers as of January 2013. Nash says this explains why the park can have more traffic but fewer visitors.  Yellowstone now uses a lower average multiplier of 2.58 persons-per-vehicle, compared to 2.91 in the past.
