Iron Mountain Elk Hunting Access Wrapping Up This Month

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will be wrapping up the second year of the Iron Mountain Hunter Management and Access Program (HMAP) this month. According to a news release for the second year this program provides access for antlerless elk hunting in hunt areas 5 and 6 between Laramie and Cheyenne.

Jason Pindell, Hunt Management Coordinator for the Iron Mountain HMAP, advises that drifting snow has made access difficult, thus reducing the number of hunters the program can accommodate. “At this time, we are calling a few of the unsuccessful applicants from the access drawing and offering the opportunity to hunt when the road conditions allow us to get to the elk,” he said. “Because of the tough conditions, the number of hunters we can call is very limited.”

Pindell adds the Game and Fish has experienced a high volume of inquiries about participating in the program this month. The Game and Fish initially held a drawing for 240 elk hunters to hunt the Iron Mountain HMAP from Nov. 12 through Dec. 15. In January, the Game and Fish has been calling some unsuccessful applicants to hunt when hunting conditions allow.
