Cheyenne Mayoral candidate Pete Illoway says he thinks the city has stagnated over the last few years, and "it's time for us to start moving forward."

Illoway, who is a former state legislator, says he thinks Mayor Rick Kaysen (who is not running for re-election) and the current Cheyenne City Council have "just maintained" the status quo rather than trying to move ahead. He says current city leadership is too focused on the past and is "going to miss the future if we don't move forward."

Illoway says he also '"wants to bring people together' as a  "consensus builder." Illoway also says the city needs to find ways to generate more money in the face of a stagnant economy and the probability that Cheyenne will be getting less state money over the next few years.

But he also says he's "not interested in new taxes" and would instead look for available grants and other non-tax funding sources.

He also says one of his priorities would be to do something about abandoned buildings in downtown Cheyenne, adding that in many cases no one seems to know who owns the buildings or what can be done about them. He says new regulations on the buildings and a more pro-active approach is needed to help revitalize the downtown area.

Illoway made the comments this week during an appearence on KGAB radio.

He is one of 10 candidates who have officially filed to appear on the August Primary ballot for Mayor of Cheyenne. One other candidate, city councilman Richard Johnson, says he is running a write-in campaign for mayor.
