I-80 Challenge Highway Safety Initiative Ends This Evening

From July 24th to mid-night on July 31st, the Wyoming Highway Patrol joined other Highway Patrol and State Police agencies serving the Interstate 80 corridor across the U.S. to crack down on drivers who are speeding, driving drunk or distracted, or not wearing a seat belt, with the goal of achieving a zero fatality rate for the eight-day period.

NHTSA advises that in 2011, there were 9,878 fatalities on America’s highways in which drunk drivers were involved. That works out to 31 percent of all motor vehicle crash fatalities for the year — about an average of one fatality every 53 minutes.

Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. During the July 24th thru July 31st initiative period extra Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers were on Patrol not just on Interstate 80 but on primary and secondary roadways as well.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Wyoming Highway patrol reports, no fatalities have been investigated by Wyoming Troopers on Interstate 80 since the start of the campaign. With just hours left until the campaign ends Troopers continue to remind motorists to drive safely.
