Laramie County Commissioner Keith "Buck' Holmes is reminding voters about the 5th penny sales tax proposal on the November Election Ballot.

Holmes says by far the largest portion of money raised by the tax--roughly 68 percent--goes for public works projects, including road and street projects. About 10 percent goes to the Laramie County Library, with around 6 percent going to local health and welfare projects and about 5 percent for law enforcement.

Smaller amounts go to a variety local entities ranging from Cheyenne Leads to various park and recreation projects.

County Public Works Director Don Beard says it costs roughly $1 million per mile to renovate and reconstruct county roads, and the fifth penny tax is one of the funding sources for such projects.

A full list of proposed spending for proceeds from the tax is available on a City of Cheyenne website.
