CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The head of the Wyoming Highway Patrol is retiring.

The Highway Patrol says Col. John Butler announced he will retire on June 1. He's been the administrator of the patrol since 2012 and is the 12th person to lead the patrol since its formation in 1933.

Butler says the decision to retire was a difficult one for him and his family. He's spent nearly 30 years with the agency.

Butler is a Douglas native and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1978. He attended the University of Wyoming before joining the Highway Patrol in 1985.
