Today is the day that the first female Wyoming Governor - Nellie Taloe Ross - cried into this world. For that, we recognize her on her birthday anniversary.  It was the year of our nation's centennial birthday 1876, the month was November and the day was the 29th. Nellie Davis Taloe, born on this date in St. Joseph Missouri, was the sixth child and first daughter born to James Wynn Taloe and Elizabeth Blair Green.

Because of a fire that burned down thet family plantation on the Missouri River, the family moved to Miltonvale County in northern Kansas when Nellie was just 7 years old.

In 1900, while visiting family in Dover, Tennessee she met her future husband, William Bradford Ross. They were married in 1902.

Mr. Ross practiced law and ended up establishing a law firm in Cheyenne. After several attempts to become the Democratic Governor of Wyoming unsuccessfully, losing to many Republicans, he finally secured the office in 1922.

Unfortunately, after about a year and a half in office, William Bradford Ross died on October 2, 1924 from complications of an appendectomy. Therefore, the Democratic Party nominated Nelllie Taloe Ross to be the Governor of Wyoming, in a special election the following month.
She also ran the United States Mint from 1933 - 1953. She lived a long life and finally passed away on December 19, 1977 in Washington D.C.

Happy Birthday Anniversary to Wyoming's first female Governor, Nellie Taloe Ross.
