CODY, Wyo. (AP) — A Cody couple got a little more than they bargained for when a Saturday outing to explore the Red Lake area turned up what appeared to be a live hand grenade.

Park County Sheriff's information officer Lance Mathess says a woman came to the Law Enforcement Center about 1 p.m. Saturday to report that she and her husband had unearthed an apparent grenade on Bureau of Land Management property.

Units from the Department of Homeland Security, BLM Fire and Law Enforcement, Park County Sheriff's Office and other agencies responded and cordoned off the area. Bomb technicians rendered the grenade safe by detonating an explosive device nearby.

The grenade was found to be a training grenade painted to resemble a live one.
Mathess says it had been buried for some time.
