Governor Matt Mead signed a proclamation Wednesday declaring August "Summer Hunger Awareness Month" in Wyoming. Tamra Jackson, Nutrition Programs Supervisor at Wyoming Department of Education, says while the summer feeding programs help children get the nutrition they need throughout the summer months, unfortunately there is often a gap in the program.

There really is a gap starting in the middle of July through when school starts. Kids that depend on the school lunches during the school year and have the summer food at the beginning of summer, are struggling in the month of August.

Jackson says Laramie County School District #1 recently expanded its summer feeding program into the month of August. Jackson says she hopes other sponsors do the same.
