General Motors announced Friday that it plans to recall nearly 474,000 of its Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn vehicles due to a serious issue that could result in the car rolling freely while in the park position.

The recall affects the 2007-2010 Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and the Saturn Aura. All of these vehicles are equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.

GM says the transmission gear position may not accurately correspond with the gear on the shifter, causing the vehicle to remain in gear even though the driver has put the car into park.

GM says it is aware of four accidents that have occurred as the result of this malfunction, but no injuries have been reported.

GM says it plans to fix these issues by having dealers install additional support mechanisms to the end of the shift cable, which will prevent the faulty part from breaking.

In addition to this recall, General Motors also says that it is recalling 6,475 Chevy Sonics due to the possibility that these vehicles are not making drivers aware of a defective turn signal bulb.

GM says it is has not been made aware of any accidents due to this malfunction. Sonic owners can expect to receive a letter about the recall by the beginning of October.
