Influenza is on the rise across Wyoming, with 460 cases reported so far this season. Wyoming Department of Health¬†spokeswoman Kim Deti said the number of cases¬†is probably higher because most influenza patients don’t seek medical attention and don’t show up in the statistics. She also said reporting isn’t consistent across the state’s counties. Campbell County led the state with 167 cases, while Laramie County, has reported 72 cases.

Deti says is still not too late to get your flu shot, but she says it does take about two weeks for the vaccine to kick in so if you are exposed to the virus in the meantime, you can still get sick.

Deti says officially the flu season runs from October thru May with the peak in normally in January or February but in 2012 the peak was in December. The number of flu cases spiked the week ending Dec. 21, 2013 when 192 cases were reported, state figures show. The previous week, 78 were logged. But that’s still far below the same week in 2012, when 502 cases were reported.
