The Bridger-Teton National Forest has officially changed the name of the northernmost ranger district from Buffalo Ranger District to Blackrock Ranger District.

The Forest received great support from the public and regional office after announcing this past May of the name change with the release of scoping documents. This summer the name changed was approved.

Thomas Matza, District Ranger at the Blackrock said, “Blackrock was named by Rudolph (Rosie) Rosencrans who founded this district in 1904. I view the change from Buffalo to Blackrock as restoration of this district’s historic name. Blackrock comes from the name of the creek that originates on the Continental Divide up on Togwotee Pass, and flows generally parallel to the highway until it joins the Buffalo Fork River just west of the office. I’m pleased to see the ranger station and district name aligned; I suspect Rosie would be too.”
