Defense Steps Forward in Cowboys First Spring Scrimmage

UW Athletics Media Relations

The Wyoming Cowboy football team went through their first scrimmage of spring drills last Saturday. After 75 minutes of action in War Memorial Stadium, the defense’s tackling caught the eye of Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl.

“I was real pleased with our first scrimmage. Obviously, we are a work in progress, but overall I though our defense did a good job tackling. Our pursuit angles looked pretty good, and I thought we gang tackled well,” Bohl said.

The defense finished with nine tackles for loss, which included seven sacks. They also forced and recovered one fumble.

Bohl added, “I thought [our defensive front] put a lot of pressure on the quarterback and established the line of scrimmage.”

Senior linebacker Mark Nzeocha led the Wyoming defense with nine total tackles, which included two for loss and a sack. He also forced and recovered the one fumble.

The offense reached the end zone just once and settled for two field goals of 23 and 29 yards, respectively. The Cowboys gained 255 total yards on 68 offensive plays. They ran 111 yards and threw for 144 yards.

Sophomore Oscar Nevermann had the lone t-d on a one-yard run with a mix of second and third string units on the field. Senior place-kicker Stuart Williams connected on both the field goals.

Last Saturday’s scrimmage was closed to the public and the media.

The Wyoming Cowboys hold their eighth practice of spring drills today. Their next scrimmage will be on Saturday, April 12. They conclude spring practice with the Spring Game on April 19. That will be the only session the media and public will be able to watch for entire practice.
