It's a mess out there, and it will get messier.

"It" refers to the storm cruising through the state that has prompted travel advisories in central and southern Wyoming, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation and the National Weather Service.

Interstate-80 was closed between Evanston and Lyman because of a crash. WYDOT did not have any other information about the crash.

From Rawlins east to the Nebraska state line, WYDOT is advising no light trailers on the interstate.

WYDOT also advises no unnecessary travel on Interstate 25 between Glenrock and Glendo; U.S. Highway 26 between Alpine Junction and Hoback Junction; and Wyoming Highway 59 between Douglas and the Campbell/Converse county line.

The National Weather Service reports snow will move to areas east of the divide today especially from Lander and Riverton east to Casper.

Total snowfall accumulations by this afternoon will range from one foot to two feet in the western mountains, four inches to eight inches in the western valleys, and generally one inch to four inches elsewhere. Higher amounts will occur in southern Wyoming.

The NWS expects skies to clear Sunday.

As of late this morning, the NWS has issued a winter storm warning for Teton, Lincoln and Uinta counties, and western Sublette County. Southern and central areas of Carbon County, and western Albany County also are under the winter storm warning.

Winter weather advisories have been issued for Yellowstone National Park, parts of Sublette and Fremont counties, and Sweetwater and Carbon counties.

WYDOT also wants to remind motorist to not crowd snowplows:

  • Slow down because they move slower than the traffic and often must make frequent stops.
  • Keep a safe distance.
  • Turn on your headlights so the plow can see you.
