Crash Near OCI Derails Train

train derailment
Wyoming Highway Patrol

The Wyoming Highway Patrol is currently investigating a crash that closed WYO 372 yesterday and caused a five-car train derailment.

The patrol says a truck driver for Lewis and Lewis identified as Sean Spiker was traveling northbound on WYO 372 when he was unable to stop for a crossing train and collided with the train. The driver was able to exit the truck by jumping out and rolled down the highway. Spiker was transported by ambulance to the hospital and then flown to Salt Lake City.

Spiker’s commercial carrier truck has been extensively damaged and not even the VIN number could be recovered. Six train cars were damaged in the collision, and five cars were derailed. Clean-up extended into the evening. WYO 372 was closed yesterday from 12:11 p.m. to the early morning hours of today. WYO 372 was reopened at 2:52 a.m. but emergency personnel and maintenance teams are still onsite investigating and cleaning up the debris.

Troopers have been on scene investigating the cause of the crash and why the driver failed to yield to the flashing lights and flaggers that were guiding the train across the highway. Troopers specializing in commercial carrier inspections have noted multiple faulty equipment violations. Troopers are still investigating any other factors that may have contributed to the crash.

WYDOT would like to remind drivers to slow down around emergency vehicles, be alert and cautious of roadside emergency personnel.
