Cowgirls Slip Past Lobos, 79-75

Marquelle Dent scored a career-high 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists to lead the Wyoming Cowgirls to a hard-fought 79-75 win over the New Mexico Lobos. The game was held in the Arena-Auditorium Wednesday night.

Wyoming (14-6, 5-4) made 10-of-14 free throws in the last 2:22, which included 7-8 by Dent, and they held on for the victory. New Mexico extended the game with seven fouls in the final two minutes. The Lobos had five players foul out.

The Cowgirls went on an 11-2 run early in the second half and led 52-39 with 14:42 remaining, but then went cold. UW missed its’ next five shots, turned the ball over seven times and went scoreless for over five-and-a-half minutes. The Lobos scored 10 straight points during the same span and pulled within 52-49. They eventually tied it at 58 with 5:52 left, but two quick lay-ups by Dent preserved Wyoming’s lead at 62-58. A short time later the foul fest commenced, and UW held on.

Three other Cowgirls scored in double figures. Kayla Woodward led the way with 22 points, while Fallon Lewis had 16 and Kaitlyn Mileto finished with 14. UW shot 52.2 percent (24-46) from the field, 7-15 (46.7%) from 3-point range, but went only 24-38 (63.2%) at the line.

New Mexico (8-13, 3-7) was led by Antiesha Brown with 22 points. Deeva Vaughn added 16. The Lobos shot only 35.8 percent (24-67) from the floor, were 6-14 (42.9%) from deep, but they kept themselves in the game at the foul line. UNM went 21-23 (91.3%) on free throws.

In the first half, the Cowgirls steadily built a seven-point lead at 29-22 before New Mexico rallied. The Lobos got within one, but UW held on for a 41-35 edge at halftime.

Wyoming is back in action Saturday versus UNLV. The Cowgirl game on February 8 against the Rebels will tip-off at 2 p.m.
