Despite a gritty and gutty effort against the bigger Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Wyoming Cowgirls lost in overtime, 61-57, Thursday in Spokane, WA.

Wyoming (3-2) was out-scored 10-to-6 in the extra period. They shot only 2-of-10 from the field in overtime.

Marleah Campbell knocked down a three with 1:38 left in OT, which made it 55-all. Gonzaga closed it out with a key 3-pointer from Elle Tinkle. Three free throws from Georgia Stirton in the final nine seconds pushed the Bulldogs to victory.

The Cowgirls trailed 51-42 with 4:38 left in the game when they mounted a comeback. Behind two field goals from Campbell, which included a three and a pair of free throws by Marquelle Dent, Wyoming pulled within two points. Dent then made a basket that tied the game at 51-51 with six seconds left and forced OT.

Gonzaga (5-3) was led by Shelby Cheslek, who scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had six blocked shots. The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field. They out-rebounded Wyoming 40-29 and scored 34 points in the paint, compared to 18 for UW.

The Cowgirls were led by Dent’s season-high 23 points. She also had four assists in 43 minutes of play. Jordan Kelley finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double this season. Campbell added a season-high eight points off the bench. Wyoming shot 34 percent from the floor.

Wyoming will try to bounce back Saturday at Idaho against the Vandals. The game starts at 3 p.m.
